Box office: historic success for Zootopia 2, here is the list of all the records broken
We had to wait until the end of the year for the box office to come out of its torpor and wake up a little. Following the thunderous launch of Wicked 2 last week it was the turn of Zootopia 2 to make the meters panic.
The animated film has indeed just made a historic start both on American soil, but especially in the world, where it has set a host of records. We take stock.

Disney, undisputed king of Thanksgiving
The Disney sequel perfectly optimized this strategic Thanksgiving weekend – which extended from Wednesday November 26 to Sunday November 30 – and raked in $156 million over these five days, including $96.8 million on the traditional Friday-Sunday. An exceptional result, especially when compared with the first film released, which debuted with $75 million in 2016.

This allows Zootopia 2 to have the second best launch of all time for a film released on Thanksgiving, behind the other Disney film Moana 2 (225.4 million). Moreover, nine of the ten biggest Thanksgiving box office starts come from Disney, which shows the studio’s supremacy over this highly coveted weekend in the United States.
Finally, it should be noted that Zootopia 2 is also the 4th best start in history, all genres combined, just behind Avengers: Endgame (1.2 billion), Avengers: Infinity War (640.5 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (600.5 million).
But the historical cardboard of Zootopia 2 is especially seen on a global and global scale, where the film totaled no less than 556.4 million dollars in one (big) weekend. It’s simple: it’s the biggest start in history for an animated film. The Disney sequel thus exceeds the previously established record by Chinese film Ne Zha 2 (431.2 million) last January.

Such a score was notably possible by China, where the film gleaned 272 million dollars this weekend, again a record for an animated film, and the best result in the country since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Suffice to say that the budget of Zootopia 2 (estimated at 150 million) has already been absorbed, and a third film is already in the works at Disney.
And the list of records achieved by Zootopia 2 don’t stop there:
- Biggest global debut for an animated film (ahead of Ne Zha 2)
- Biggest global startup of the year 2025 (ahead of Ne Zha 2)
- Biggest start for an animated film sequel (ahead Moana 2)
- Biggest start for The Walt Disney Animation Studio (ahead Moana 2)
- Biggest start ever for a Disney animated film
- Biggest progression for a start between the original film and its sequel (239%)
- Biggest start in China for a non-Chinese film (ahead of Avengers: Endgame)
- Biggest start in the world for an animated film, and for a film from the Walt Disney Animation studio

But this weekend was also a record thanks to the nice score of Wicked: Part 2 which recorded 93 million dollars over the five days of Thanskgiving, including 62.8 million on the traditional Friday-Sunday. A very good second weekend which allowed the Universal film to reach 270 million on American soil, and to tickle 400 million worldwide.
The sequel is on track to do better than the original film released last year, which ended its career at $758 million worldwide. There too, a continuation of the universe Wicked is unsurprisingly under consideration by Universal. The most important thing is that the cinema is full again, and that’s nice.
