Box office: Running Man misses his start, beaten by the robbers of Elusive 3
A week after the release of Predator: Badlands which had (a little) awakened the cinemas, American theaters welcomed new potentially popular films this weekend, Elusive 3 And Running Man in mind. In the fight for first place, it was the magicians who drew the best cards, while Edgar Wright’s latest film disappoints.
Lionsgate laughs, Paramount cries
It’s a rather paradoxical weekend for Elusive. With 21.3 million dollars, the third opus sits comfortably at the top of the ranking… while marking the worst start of the Lionsgate franchise. In 2013, the first part opened with 29.3 million, while its 2016 sequel recorded 22.3 million.

This American score is supplemented by $54.2 million raised internationally, coming from 64 countries. A less impressive launch therefore, but which is enough for the band of magicians/robbers led by Jesse Eisenberg to hope to repay their budget of 90 million dollars. This especially gives color to the Lionsgate studio after the failures of Ballerina And Walk or die.

The other big outing of the weekend was the Running Man by Edgar Wright, new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. While the studio hoped to see the action film above 20 million dollars, it will have to be content with a meager launch of 17 million in the United States, for a worldwide cumulative of 28.2 million dollars.
Despite the good quality of the film (as we detail in our review), it is difficult not to see it as a failure for Paramount Picutres, especially given the feature film’s substantial budget, estimated at $110 million.

It’s also a disappointment for Glen Powell: Running Man could propel him as a first-rate actor capable of bringing audiences back to theaters, but the miracle did not happen. Same story for Edgar Wright, for whom it was his first major production. The director of Shaun of the Dead And Scott Pilgrim does less well here than the comparable Baby Driver (20.5 million at start). Damage.

In the rest of the box office, Predator: Badlands falling relatively heavily from its pedestal, with only $13 million raked in in its second weekend, down 68% from the previous week.
If the new film in the saga works better than the others in the United States, this is not the case in the rest of the world. Its overall accumulation thus reaches 136.3 million dollars, and has still not caught up with the previous one. The Predator of 2018 (159.4 million), confirming that the franchise has not really changed in size.
Finally, we note that One battle after another by Paul Thomas Anderson finally passes the mark of 200 million dollars generated worldwide, when Tron: Ares painfully reached 140 million, confirming its status as a resounding flop for Disney. The box office should wake up sharply this weekend with the arrival of Wicked: Part 2.
