After a disappointing start to the year, the American box office was awakened last week thanks to the Canon starter of Minecraft, the film ($ 157 million). The adaptation of the famous video game continues to surf the success this weekend. Will this be enough to reach the billion dollars around the world? We take stock.
Minecraftreal “blocks”-
For its second operating weekend, Minecraft, the film thus garnered $ 80.6 million, signing the 16th best second weekend of all time, and the second best for an adaptation of video games, just behind that of Super Mario Bros, the film (92.3 million).
Above all, Minecraft lost only 52% of its audience compared to the previous week. A more than correct public retention for a film of this profile, which shows that it works far beyond the fans of the original game.

As a comparison, it is certainly less good than Super Mario Bros, the film (-37%) and Sonic 3 (-38%), but it's better than Deadpool & Wolverine (-54.2%), Vaiana 2 (-63%) or the recent Captain America: Brave New World (-68%). This allows Minecraft To bring its cumulation in the United States to 280.9 million in 10 days, and its total world at 550 million.
The feature filled by Jack Black and Jason Momoa thus remains in the footsteps of Super Mario Bros, the film Who had, let us recall, ended his career by garnering $ 1.3 billion on the globe. At this rate, Minecraft, the film should also exceed the symbolic bar of the billion, and offer a new world card for an adaptation of video games.

The rest of the ranking this week is only made up of new features. In second place, The King of Kings records $ 19 million. This feature film on the life of Jesus thus signals the best start for a biblical animated film, before The Prince of Egypt (14.5 million) of DreamWorks, released in 1998. A nice launch which will allow it to easily absorb its modest budget (35 million).
Just behind him, the thriller The amateur 20th Century Studios (and therefore Disney) gleaks 15 million for its beginnings, and confirms that Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) Do not move the crowds on his name alone. In any case, it will have trouble justifying its budget of 60 million. For his part, the film Warfare of Alex Garland begins with only $ 8.3 million, far from the start of his previous Civil Warand this despite good criticism. Light.
