Box-Office: Thunderbolts* wins the crown but does not save Marvel

There was a time when each Marvel film was an event and panicked the counters. But this era is definitely well over, as confirmed by the disappointing start of Thunderbolts * At the American box office, which does not invert a disturbing dynamic for the superhero franchise.

With 76 million dollars garnered for its first weekend of operating on American soil, Thunderbolts * Sign a start -up that many studios would like to have … but which is necessarily disappointing for a Marvel Studios production in the estimated budget of $ 180 million excluding marketing. For comparison, Jack Schreier’s film is certainly better than the beginnings of Shang-chi (75.3 million), Eternal (71.2 million) or Ant-man and the wasp (75.8 million), but it remains behind the launches of Black Widow (80.3 million) or Thor: The Dark World (85.7 million), and far from the symbolic bar of $ 100 million.
Above all, it does less well than Captain America: Brave New World Released last February (88.8 million) and fails to reverse a growing disinterest dynamic for the superhero franchise.
Unlike the mediocre film carried by Anthony Mackie, Thunderbolts * can however count on positive criticisms (including ours) and a good word of mouth. It will therefore be interesting to see how the Marvel film is maintained in the second week, and it is to bet it will do better than Captain America 4which had lost 68% of its audience from one week to the next.

In second place in the ranking, Sinners De Ryan Coogler continues his magnificent career and adds $ 33 million to his bag for his third weekend, culminating at 179.7 million in the United States and nearly 250 million worldwide.
The horror film confirms its status as a phenomenon and can easily dream of reaching 300 million at the end of the route, far enough to absorb its relatively modest budget of 90 million. American cinema had not experienced an original film as popular since US by Jordan Peele in 2019, and Coogler settles definitively as an essential director of Hollywood.

In the rest of the box office, Minecraft is still maintained in 3rd position with 13.7 million and comforts its place of bigger success of the year in the United States, which will soon exceed $ 400 million. In the world, the film now rises to 873.4 million.
It will be a bit short to reach the billion on the globe at the end of his career, but it is obviously a new size franchise that Warner Bros. So expect a suite in a pair of years.
