Burns, melted plastic smells: Sonos speaker users launch the alert

Sonos perhaps between a new storm. Several owners of the Roam portable speaker model, marketed by the brand, have reported an overheating of the USB-C port. In this sense, the connector could even melt in certain situations, causing a risk of fire.

Sonos recognizes the problem, but tries to be reassuring
In recent months, several users have reported the same testimony on the Reddit online discussion forum. The first generation of nomadic Sonos Roam speakers would be subject to possible overheating when they recharge. The intense heat generated at the USB-C port would pose a problem when the speaker is close to a potentially flammable object, like curtains for example.
If Sonos repairs the models concerned by this abnormal heating for free during the load, the brand tends to minimize the phenomenon, advancing that it is a “very low number of cases”. The company specifies that only a few copies of the first generation of ROAMs are concerned, in fact excluding any problem concerning the new models.
A solution under development
Sonos also indicates that certain external factors, such as ambient temperature and humidity, could have played a role in the overheating cases of its speakers. However, the manufacturer wants to be reassuring and indicates that a software update is in preparation, in order to reduce these risks during the load.
At a time when we write these lines, some recent testimonies continue to be published on Reddit. Without giving up the use of the enclosure, which would be somewhat radical, it is recommended to apply preventive measures such as avoiding recharging the first generation Roam alongside a flammable object. Better yet, using the Sonos wireless charger if possible: the overheating problem would only concern the USB-C port integrated into the speaker.
