Byd goes beyond the sales of Citroën in Europe, the French brand in danger
Byd stands out as the new number one of the Chinese manufacturers, even dethroning Tesla. In 2024, the car manufacturer sold 50,265 vehicles in Europe with, in particular, its electric cars and the SEAL U DM-I hybrid SUVs.
Byd surpasses Citroën on the segment of the VEs
According to Jato data, on the 100 % electric vehicle market, BYD sold 17,729 units in the first quarter of 2025, a spectacular increase of 133 % compared to last year over the same period.
Byd’s meteoric growth allows him to overcome his compatriot MG but also several brands like Citroën, Dacia, Mini, Opel or Ford on the electric segment. However, if you include hybrid models, MG keeps its advantage thanks to more accessible entry -level vehicles.
The situation is more worrying for traditional manufacturers on sales in March 2025. Byd is dangerously close to the Hyundai, Volvo and Peugeot giants with a few hundred electric vehicles.
The ranking of the first quarter of 2025 also shows the emergence of new Chinese brands in the European top 25. Polestar and Xpeng appear with, respectively, 9,662 and 3,377 copies sold. The figures remain below those of Byd but confirm the rise of Chinese manufacturers in Europe.
