ChatGPT-5.1 is coming: what really changes after the disappointment of GPT-5

ChatGPT-5 made a lot of people disappointedthe fault of a model considered less effective compared to GPT-4o, in particular with its shorter, less relevant and not very warm responses. However, performance in complex tasks, including coding, mathematics and scientific reasoning, had been significantly improved. To make up for the blow, OpenAI has just launched a new model, called GPT-5.1.

In a press release shared this Wednesday, November 12, 2025, OpenAI recognizes its errors with GPT-5 : “Users have made it clear to us that good AI should not only be intelligent, but also pleasant to be around. GPT-5.1 brings significant improvements in both intelligence and communication style.”

In details, ChatGPT has two new models. To begin with, GPT-5.1 Instant intends to be more warm and conversational, with the added bonus of adaptive reasoning allowing it to “deciding when to think before answering more difficult questions, leading to more complete and accurate answers, while still responding quickly”.

The second model is called GPT‑5.1 Thinking. As its name suggests, it reasons in more depth. Described by OpenAI as “more efficient and easier to understand on a daily basis” than GPT-5, it scales to answer simple queries quickly, while taking longer for more complex ones.

These two new AI models (GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking) are being deployed to paying ChatGPT users, i.e. Pro, Plus, Go and Business. When they have all tasted it, it will be the turn of those using AI for free to benefit from it.

Note that ChatGPT also received three new personalities: Professional (polite and precise), Candid (direct and encouraging) and Quirky (playful and imaginative). A way to adapt AI to needs, with responses more in line with the task in progress or simply the personality of the requester.
