Cloud storage: What are the five best offers?

Whether to store your precious documents, your photos and videos in order to keep them safe, or to share them more easily, the cloud has become an essential option. Here are the best solutions of the moment to preserve your files and your privacy.
Photo after photo, document after document, our hard drives are filled and storage in the cloud no longer becomes a distant concern but an emergency. Problem, in front of the avalanche of solutions available on the market, difficult to sort it out. Which solution to choose? What criteria to favor? In view of the context of unpredictable and unexpected tensions with the United States is it not a good idea to deviate from the solutions presented by the Big Tech? Here are some answers and our selection.
Criteria to make the right choice
- First criterion, a cloud storage service is now essential to save our digital lives. Our photos, files, possible administrative documents, backups of our machines, all deserves to be preserved. The storage capacity offered free of charge and paidly is therefore a primordial criterion.
- Second criterion, security is also to be taken into account. Whether it is data encryption or storage on servers subject to regulations that protect users’ privacy, such as the GDPR, for example.
- Third criterion, the question of the interface of use and the richness of the overall offer of the operator. The interface must be clear and well thought out to prevent synchronizing your files from becoming an unnamed ordeal. With, of course, attention paid to the dedicated applications available and their efficiency. While some players go beyond the simple cloud solution and offers an ecosystem of web applications and services, which, for an equivalent price, offers much more.
- Finally, fourth criterion, even if all operators in the cloud do not necessarily display it, it is important to take into account the ecological dimension of the cloud and the possible efforts implemented by the actors to use renewable energy as much as possible.
With this reading grid, we retained five actors. We have tried to focus on European offers when possible and decided to immediately exclude the three giants that are Apple, Google and Microsoft whose omnipresent solutions are carried by their integration into the operating systems they deploy.
The objective is not to establish a final classification because the needs vary from one user to another and the offers can also fluctuate. This is why we put a kind of mention to these five cloud operators according to their proposals.
KDRIVE, the best offer all in one
Developed and hosted in Switzerland, KDRIVE stands out on several important points. First of all, by its strong ecological position. Thus, all the data centers of the company Infomaniak, which offers this service, are supplied exclusively with local renewable energy. The last data center, inaugurated in 2025, even uses the heat produced by the servers to heat up to 6,000 dwellings. Then KDRIVE also respects the very strict Swiss privacy law, as well as the GDPR. Your data is therefore preserved.
Finally, the KDRIVE offer offers 15 GB of storage for free – which makes it the second most generous solution on this point in our comparison. Your KDRIVE account also gives you free access to the ONLYOFFICE Office suite, compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as my KSUITE, a set of high -performance online collaboration tools. If you wish, you will be able to take advantage of a secure and advertising email address, a calendar system and contact book, a videoconferencing tool, secure file sharing tool and temporary data, etc. KDRIVE can also be ordered alone from 3 TB of storage for 4.99 euros/month (billed year -round) or 6 TB for 6.66 euros/month (billed year -round). In total, it is up to 106 TB of possible space. It is by far the most complete and most balanced offer.
Dropbox, the reference for file sharing and team collaboration
Renowned for its advanced collaboration tools, its synchronization in effective real time and its integration of many third -party applications, Dropbox has its adoption by many companies, some of which come from the creation industry.
Nevertheless, its free offer is limited to only 2 GB (even if you can reach up to 16 GB by being sponsored) and 2 TB for the most expensive public offer (9.99 euros/month, billed year -round). In addition, if the encryption is solid (AES-256, TLS/SSL), Dropbox does not support the “Zero-Knowledge”. The service can therefore technically access your files. Another point that can worry, from a privacy point of view, Dropbox is subject to American law and can leave the police scan your data.
An ideal solution for those who need to work with others on files.
Mega, the biggest free storage
20 GB! This is the amount of storage available with the free offer. What makes Mega the most generous structure in the matter – a generosity found in the paid offer which gives access to 16 TB to the maximum, against 25 euros per month for an annual payment …
In addition, the company, originally launched by Kim Dotcom, has chosen to quantify strongly and end the files (and communications from cats and video calls) by supporting proof encryption with zero disclosure (Zero-Knowledge).
As for less positive points, let’s specify that Mega is subject to Neozelandian law and that his collaboration tools are rather basic. It is therefore not very easy to edit documents in real time.
PCloud, the best storage to keep videos
Still a Swiss company and therefore subject to the very strict Swiss law in terms of data protection and of course also to the European GDPR. Pcloud offers 10 GB in its free offer, rapid synchronization of files, streaming video files and advanced sharing functions.
Likewise, its “life” offers are an ingenious and rather attractive idea. They indeed ensure a nice quality/price ratio.
Nevertheless, advanced encryption is a paid option, and collaboration functions are not as efficient as that of Dropbox or KDRIVE.
The paid offer grants you up to 10 TB of storage, especially adapted to the storage of videos.
Proton Drive, the best for privacy
Originally from Switzerland, and therefore subject to one of the strictest laws in terms of protecting our data, Proton was the champion of our private lives, with his secure email service or VPN. With Proton Drive, it is therefore to storage that the Swiss company applies this commitment. The default figure is solid, and even prevents Proton from knowing what you keep. In addition, the Open Source Code is regularly audited to detect any flaw and thus strengthen security.
On the other hand, the free offer only offers 5 GB, which is a bit short, and up to 1 TB via the paid offer (Proton Duo). In addition, the speed of synchronization is a little slower than those of its best competitors and Proton Drive offers much less advanced functions than its competitors, such as Dropbox or KDRIVE. The fairly recent offer nevertheless gains in maturity.
