Cyberpunk 2: CD Projekt formalizes the rest, but you will have to be (very) patient to play it

After months of silence (and an enigmatic code name: Project Orion), CD Projekt Red confirms that Cyberpunk 2 is on the way. The Polish studio has just announced the passage of the project in the preproduction phase, a strategic step in the gestation of an AAA game. In parallel, The Witcher 4 still mobilizes most of his troops. But the cybernetic universe is far from abandoned: a new city has just been mentioned, with a very American accent and a scent of urban chaos.

Cyberpunk 2 officially launched: what we know about the Orion project

It is now official therefore: the direct rest of Cyberpunk 2077 will bear the name of Cyberpunk 2. And if the project remains wrapped in a certain mystery, CD Projekt confirms that the conceptualization phase is over. Development therefore enters its second step, preproduction. Concretely, this means that the contours of the game are becoming clearer: prototypes, recruitment, narrative structure and technological choices are on the agenda.

I’m not going to advance on a date, but our average cycle between preproduction and the final release is 4 to 5 years.

Currently, 96 developers are assigned to Cyberpunk 2. The bulk of the workforce, i.e. 422 people, always work on The Witcher 4. It will therefore be necessary to be patient: the studio tables a production cycle of 4 to 5 years on average, without excluding an outing … after 2030.

But there hype already is reborn. Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk universe, recently revealed that the game will integrate a brand new city, distinct from Night City, described as a dystopian version of Chicago. It is not necessarily a Chicago 2077, but the atmosphere promises to be more industrial, raw, darker.

While waiting to know more, the world of Cyberpunk continues to expand: a new animation project is underway at Netflix, in the footsteps of the critical success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. And Cyberpunk 2077 are about to disembark on Nintendo Switch 2a nice wink for a license that was able to bounce back after a tumultuous launch.
