Faced with Fujifilm’s launch frenzy, it was difficult to know if Fujifilm had enough resources to follow up on its XE range. The answer is today a big yes, with the announcement of the X-E5, hybrid housing with APS-C sensor which succeeds the X-E4 launched in 2021.

A highly anticipated case which continues to surf the success of the neo-retro look of the brand’s devices. There is therefore only one Arlesian in Fujifilm laboratories: a potential successor to X-Pro 3 from 2019. For this year? For the following electronic generation? One day, maybe …

In appearance, the X-E5 will therefore seduce X-E4 lovers. But also and above all those who dream of a X100VI But cannot be resolved to buy a fixed optical box. Its box body is indeed less imposing than the X100VI and a new 23 mm ultra -flat optics serves it. Fujifilm will therefore complement its range here in a very subtle way by competing … itself.

Under the X-E5 hood, we find the same torque sensor/processor as the X-H2 (not the X-H2S, which has a faster, but less defined sensor), X-T5X-T50 and X100VI. Namely the X-CoSessor V and the X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor of 40 MP. Understand here that image quality and AF acquisition speed of subjects will be strictly identical between all these boxes.

The basic sensitivity is still at ISO 125, the electronic shutter rises to 1/180,000 s, the algorithms are of the latest generation, trained to recognize a number of subjects (birds, humans, motorcycles, insects and even drones!).

40 MP stabilized and a nice price increase

If you have to remember only one thing from the contribution of the X-E5 compared to its ancestors, this is this: it is the first 10th to mechanical stabilization of the caper, which displays 40 MPx, a definition leap of 50 % compared to the previous generation (26 Mpix).

The X-E5 is therefore a much less castrated device than its predecessor. A rise made possible by two factors. The first is that Fujifilm now has a large entry-level offer, with the very recent X-M5, X-S20 and X-T30ii (Yes, always on sale!).

But also and above all thanks to a major increase in the price. When the X-E4 was launched at € 899 naked box in February 2021 last, this X-E5 will appear in the coming weeks at € 1,549 in the same format. Yes, that makes an increase of 72 %…

Aimed: old -fashioned or supervised

To justify this price, the X-E5 is therefore based on much more efficient electronics. But rather than being a simple X-T5 more compact, it also adds its grain of salt. In particular on the viewfinder side, which benefits from refinements not technological, but ergonomic.

The first is a function called “classic display”, which reduces information to their simplest expression. And the fact with the appearance of old silver reflex. The other function is called “supervised view” and allows you to enjoy a full -frame aim even by having chosen a different crop format (5/4, 1/1). We feel here the influence of GFX100RF and its executive wheel.

Performances, design and finishes increasing

The influence of recent fujifilm (X100VI, GFX100RF, etc.) boxes feels on Fujifilm communication images. Photos that illustrate the upmarket of design, controls and materials. We note the protruding edges of the new generations of boxes, the mechanical selection wheel for film simulations or the machined aluminum cover.

Like the X100VI, there is a lever on the front, lever that can be personalized: display mode, choice of framing, etc. An element absent from the X-E4 which brings him even more closer to the X100VI. And to go even further in this direction, Fujifilm has even drawn a dedicated optics.

With only 90 grams and a thickness of 2.3 cm (such as the XF27 mm), the new Fujinon XF23 mm f/2.8 R WR is part of this category of fixed focal lengths called “pancakes” – no, nobody says pancake or other specialty of the genre.

What to offer to the X-E5 thus equipped, more or less the same template as a x100Vi. We pay here the ability to be able to change the optics of an entire opening value (a diaph in the jargon), since the f/2.0 opening of the X100Vi therefore captures twice as much light.

Designed through 8 lenses (including 2 aspirials) divided into 6 groups, this optics promise, according to Fujifilm, to have a resolution power largely sufficient to satisfy the demanding 40 Mpix sensor of the X-E5. Its 11 -strip diaphragm promises a “superb circular effect”, according to the press release. If this will be possible with the nearest subjects-the minimum focusing distance is 20 cm-do not plan to make portraits with very blurred background however. This is a large-angle optics at f/2.8, huh, not a 50 mm to f/1.8!

Total congestion is equivalent to that of X100VI. Luminosity less, more modularity.

We note in this fixed fixed focal length the constancy of Fujifilm which continues to protect its recent optics against water and dust (WR mention for Weather Resistant).

The X-E5 will be available in the course of August:

  • X-E5 in black or silver version, bare housing at € 1,549
  • X-E5 in black or silver version + Fujinon XF23 mm f/2.8 R WR at € 1,799 (yes, the launch price of the X100Vi!)

The Fujinon XF23 mm f/2.8 R WR optics will be launched at € 449. But Fujifilm favoring availability in kit with the X-E5, this optics will only be available alone in the end of 2025.
