DJI Osmo Action 6: the first action camera with variable aperture, sorry!

In the wake of the drone Neo 2 and stabilizer Osmo Mobile 8DJI continues the new developments with the arrival of the Osmo Action 6, the latest generation of the DJI action camera range. While all conventionally designed action cameras are fixed aperture, the Osmo Action 6 for the first time offers a variable aperture with a range of f/2.0 to f/4.0, promising excellent low-light performance.

In auto mode, the Osmo Action 6 offers adaptive aperture range options, and the aperture automatically adjusts within each range to deliver sharp results in a variety of settings, from low-light night scenes to bright, detailed landscapes. With Star Effect mode, city lights transform into vibrant stars, adding a striking creative effect and interest to well-lit metropolitan scenes.

Experts can achieve creative shallow depth of field using the Macro Lens accessory (sold separately). With this accessory, the minimum focusing distance drops from 35cm to just 11cm, allowing for sharp close-up selfies. If you want to see wider, DJI offers the Osmo Action 6 FOV augmentation accessory (sold separately) to expand the native field of view from 155° to 182°, ideal for immersive edge-to-edge shots.

With IP68 waterproof certification, the camera is waterproof up to 20 meters without a housing and up to 60 meters with the waterproof housing (optional). Its built-in color temperature sensor ensures true-to-life underwater colors, while the pressure gauge records dive data.

1/1.1 inch square sensor

The Osmo Action 6 therefore opts for a new 1/1.1 inch sensor, custom designed by DJI. With its large 2.4 μm fused pixels, this sensor delivers up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range for sharp details even in high-contrast environments as well as improved low-light image quality, even in extremely dark environments. With its larger sensor, wider aperture and a new advanced noise reduction technique, the Osmo Action 6 enables SuperNight mode to deliver clarity at night, recording up to 4K/60 FPS in low-light conditions. DJI’s 10-bit D-Log M color system helps maintain detail in highlights and shadows, making post-production easier. The Osmo Action 6 also offers on-screen D-Log M preview for real-time color and exposure monitoring. It also inaugurates the new Custom 4K mode allowing you to film first, then reframe in post-production to produce clips according to different social media platforms.

Slow motion and super slow motion

The little news natively records in slow motion up to 4K/120 IPS and will be able to generate current super slow motion playback up to 32x in 1080p. By interpolating images recorded at 1080p/240 fps, the Osmo Action 6 produces a slow motion effect equivalent to 960 FPS when playing back at 1080 p/30 fps, for a cinematic rendering of action sequences.

Professional-level features

DJI equips its camera with well-known features with the integration of RockSteady 3.0/RockSteady 3.0+, HorizonBalancing and HorizonSteady stabilization modes. The key is excellent stabilization which eliminates vibrations on the roll axis over 360° and corrects inclinations to maintain a perfectly stable horizon within a range of ±45°. The Osmo Action 6 also benefits from a portrait mode that intelligently detects and prioritizes the subject while optimizing exposure for true-to-life skin tones as well as an intelligent subject centering and tracking mode to keep them in the center of the frame. The camera will also be able to customize the colorimetric renderings of the sequences with six integrated film tones.
