Do you have a Mac before 2020? Apple will not update it after MacOS Tahoe
During its Platforms State of the Union event, Apple has formalized what many foresee: MacOS 27, scheduled for 2026, will only concern Macs equipped with Apple Silicon chips. For Intel machines, MacOS Tahoe, freshly announcedwill be the singing of the swan. The firm does not speak of complete abandonment, but of a clear relay passage, leaving ancient Macs only a possible net of security updates.
Apple buries Mac Intel with MacOS Tahoe: End of course assumed
It has been four years since Apple had started its internal revolution, methodically replacing intel processors with its own homemade chipsfirst with the M1, then with the M2 and M3. A transition to forced march, completed in 2023, and which today finds its end point: with MacOS Tahoe, the Mac Intel receives their final major update.
From MacOS 27, the machines powered by Intel – whether it be iMac, MacBook Pro or Mac Mini – will be dismissed from the system developments. Apple fully assumes this choice: to concentrate its efforts on its Arm architectures, on which it masters the entire chain, from silicon to software. A coherent but brutal strategy for an still massive installed base.
Here are the Intel models officially affected by this exclusion:
- MacBook Air (2015 to 2020)
- MacBook Pro (2015 to 2019 for 13 ”, up to 2020 for the 16”)
- IMAC (2015 to 2020)
- Mac Mini (2014 to 2018)
- Mac Pro (2013 to 2019)
- MacBook 12 ”(2015 to 2017)
All of these devices will still be able to receive some security fixes, but without new major features.
In fact, this means that the Mac Intel – sometimes bought barely five years ago – will slowly slide towards software obsolescence. Apple still promises a net of security updates, but everyone will have understood the message: the innovation train will no longer wait for them.
It’s not just about turning a page. It is a form of divorce between Apple and a technology that accompanied it for almost two decades. And for the faithful who have not yet crossed the CAP of the Apple Silicon, the message is clear: it is time to migrate … or to agree to stay on the platform.
