Elon Musk takes out the checkbook and pays the high price to join Grok in Telegram

Grok invites himself on Telegram for $ 300 million

To integrate Grok into Telegram, Elon Musk did not do things by halves. “We will receive $ 300 million in liquidity and in participation of XAI, plus 50 percent of the income of XAI subscriptions sold via Telegram”specifies Pavel Durov.

As a reminder, Telegram is monitored because of its use by the Russian authorities. According to a 2024 report by Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLAB) of Atlantic Council, messaging is used as relays of influence operations.

The intergovernmental coalition of states, Community of Democracies, also published a report last January which spoke of the use of Telegram and X, owned by Elon Musk, in the dissemination of foreign disinformation.

However, Pavel Durov reassures confidentiality following this announcement. “Users’ confidentiality is essential,” he said. “To be clear, XAI will only accept data that Telegram users explicitly share with Grok via direct interactions. This is expected – you cannot send a message to someone (including a chatbot) without sharing what you write.”

Telegram’s confidentiality is debated. Messaging offers encryption but, according to Matthew Green, cryptographer and professor at Johns Hopkins University, this is a default option. Pavel Durov is a citizen of Russia, France and the United Arab Emirates. His arrest took place last August in France. The authorities accused messaging of not doing what is necessary to stop drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime and the dissemination of child pornographic content.

The billionaire was released on bail of five million euros after his arrest. He would be in Paris and must present himself regularly to the police while waiting for his trial which would not take place in 2025. Last week, a trip between France and the United States as part of a business was refused. Telegram did not respond, questioned if this trip had a link with Xai.
