“It is deeply worrying that one of the best AI researchers with whom I collaborated was refused an American green card”said Noam Brown on X. “A Canadian who has lived and contributed here for twelve years must now leave. We jeopardize American leadership in artificial intelligence by pushing talents of this scale.”
Openai defends the threatened researcher
Dylan Hunn, an employee at Openai, spoke of the importance of Kai Chen in the development of Chatgpt-4.5, one of the flagship models of the company. Noam Brown specifies that the refusal of the Green Card does not rhyme with a dismissal. The researcher will telework from an airbnb in Vancouver “Until this situation is resolved, let’s hope it”.
The incident shows the obstacles experienced by foreign talents who wish to live, work and study in the United States under the Trump administration. Sam Altman, manager of Openai, had pleaded on X, in July 2023, to facilitate the immigration of qualified people in the United States.
For several months, more than 1,700 foreign students on US soil, including IA researchers present for years, have seen their visa refused in the context of severe repression in the United States. The government accuses some of minor offenses such as speeding or road tickets. Others are qualified as“anti -Semites” due to their support for Palestine.
The Trump administration is uncompromising in the face of holders of a Green Card who are perceived as threats to the “National Security”by holding and threatening several of them with expulsion.
Openai has several times stressed that its LA laboratories depends on foreign talents. According to Shaun Ralston, a service provider, the company made more than 80 requests for H1-B visa last year and spoke more than 100 visas since 2022.
