After years of insolent domination, Tesla continues her descent to Europe. The figures for the first half of 2025 have just fallen, and they are final: the American manufacturer fell by 33 % over a year, while Volkswagen jumped 78 %. Result: the German brand becomes number one of the sales of electric vehicles on the old continent. A reversal of a sense of meaning.

Tesla is backing up, Volkswagen goes for it: Europe turns the page on the US electric

The decline was announced, but not with such brutality. From January to June 2025, Tesla has sold “only” 108,878 electric vehicles in Europe, against 133,465 for Volkswagen, according to preliminary data from Dataforce. It is 24,587 units apart. And this is not an isolated trend.

Even the very popular model yyet always number one of the sales in the classification by model, does not escape down: –30 % over a year. At the same time, the ID.4, the ID.7 and even the Volkswagen ID.3 grabbed the field. The multiple offensive strategy works: while Tesla still puts everything on two silhouettes, the competition is wide.

BMW (93,576 sales, +14 %), SKODA (70,947, +146 %) and Renault (63,704, +58 %) stand out as rising forces. The rise of the Skoda Enyaq/Elroq duo and the breakthrough of the Renault 5 Witness: the battle of electricity is now played at home, on well -calibrated segments, with “accessible” and available models.

Meanwhile, Tesla tries to reassure. Elon Musk promised a “major rebound” at the end of industrial adjustments Linked to the new Model Y. But Europe is advancing. The overall market increased by 24 % in the first half, from 944,858 to 1,177,051 vehicles. And Tesla, the only brand of the top 5 to back up in June, seems to look at this train to go … without getting on board.
