Fan and ice creams, what is this tip really worth refreshing a room?
At the house of Digitalwe put at the head to tame the heat. Objective: to tinker with a home air conditioning with fan and ice cream. The objective: to determine if the addition of ice creams to a domestic fan makes it possible to significantly lower the room temperature.
Context of the experience
The device used is the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+, a fan recognized for its power and its relative sound discretion. To simulate an “air conditioning” effect, cold accumulators (ice breads) were arranged successively behind, then in front of the fan, and the temperatures were measured at different points of the room using probes placed in and out of the air flow.

Accumulator position: behind the fan
During a first test, the ice blocks were installed at the back of the device. After an hour of continuous operation, the ambient temperature has practically not evolved: only 0.2 ° C of difference, a negligible gap which can be explained by external fluctuations.

Our analysis: the fan, by sucking the ambient air, fails to effectively capture the cold located behind it. Thermal diffusion therefore remains unchanged.

Ice breads placed in front of the fan: first notable effects
In a second configuration, the ice breads are positioned directly in front of the fan, up to its flow. This time, the results are evolving. The probe placed at 1 meter opposite the device records a drop in temperature of 0.7 ° C, while those located out of the flow are a modest variation of 0.6 ° C.

Our analysis: by blowing directly on a cold source, the fan manages to diffuse a feeling of perceptible, although localized. The effect is limited to the area directly exposed to air flow.
Reduction of ventilation speed: amplified thermal gain
In order to optimize the restitution of the cold, a final series of measurements is carried out at minimum speed. This choice aims to reduce the engine warm -up and more concentrate the air flow on the cold source. The probes record a drop from 1.8 ° C to 2.2 ° C, still in the area opposite the fan. The impact on the room temperature remains low, but the thermal feeling improves clearly.

Our analysis: at low speed, ventilation causes a more homogeneous diffusion of cold over a short distance, which improves the subjective efficiency of the device.
An improvement in thermal comfort, without real drop in room temperature
It is essential to recall that a fan does not cool the air, it is content to set it in motion. Nevertheless, combined with a localized cold source – here, ice breads – it allows you to create a refreshing air current, perceptible by the human body. If the overall temperature of the room remains almost unchanged, the feeling of freshness increases significantly, especially in the event of hot weather.
