Almost a year ago, in September 2024, Free Mobile was the first French operator activated 5G SA. Then offered as an option and since renamed 5G+, technology has passed a new step with the operator, since partially caught up in competition.

5G+ is democratized little by little, especially at Free

It was during a press conference around his Latest financial results That Free made the following ad: Goodbye the 5G SA option to activate manually by subscribers, it is now activated by default for eligible customers.

Thus, only holders of the Free 5G subscription to 19.99 euros per month are affected. Those at € 2 and € 9.99 will have to be satisfied with 4G or classic 5G. In addition, it will be necessary to be in possession of one of the 150 devices compatible with this technology allowing to benefit from a better connection. The most recent and high -end models at Apple, Samsung, Honor, Google and Xiaomi are particularly concerned.

For the record, 5G+ (described as “real 5G”) is intended to be faster, more reliable and more secure thanks to the use of dedicated infrastructure, rather than resting on those of 4G. In the event of a non-covering, it is therefore possible to continue to capture from time to time from 5G NSA.

Anyway, with this Free Mobile decision becomes the first operator to deploy 5G+ by default, and not only in the form of an option to activate. Load to Orange and Bouygues Telecom to react now, while SFR still does not offer 5G+ in its packages.
