Free clearly intends to intensify its efforts concerning the sustainability of its internet boxes. In a recent document relayed by Freebox universethe operator actually shares clear axes to reduce the environmental impact of these devices, in particular thanks to modular models. And it is not only on this point that the operator works!

Free projects for its next freebox

In the section entitled “Actions aimed at minimizing the impact of products and services” in the Universal recording document From Iliad shared this April 24, 2025, the future of the Freebox is clearly specified.

We discover that the objective of Free is to “Make the product [Freebox] more compact ”but also “Reduce the amount of raw materials used in its production and packaging”.

The other point mentioned by the operator is the modular approach to Freebox, “Which allows you to change certain electronic components so that you can align equipment on the latest standard standards without having to replace them entirely”.

This is illustrated in particular with updated WiFi cards during the life of the Free Internet boxes, such as the passage from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6 and recently at WiFi 7 for the Freebox Pop.

Free also announces to opt for more easily recyclable components – such as the butadiene styrene acrylonitrile – while limiting the production of electronic waste as much as possible.

All these efforts arise from a central principle in Free: a design directly focused on sustainability. “Freebox is designed from the outset so as to be the most easily repairable and given to the highest standards available on the market”thus underlines the company of Xavier Niel.
