A version of Gemini for children under the age of 13

While conversational chatbots based on generative artificial intelligence strengthen their omnipresence in our lives, Google tends to want to accustom an increasingly young audience to its products. If millions of adolescents already use Gemini, for recreational use as for homework help, the Mountain View firm announces a version of its AI adapted to children.

According to information reported by the New York Times and confirmed to this same media by Karl Ryan, spokesperson for Google, parents have been receiving emails from Google for a few days which indicate ” Your child will soon be able to access Gemini applications ». The email also specifies that it will be possible for them to ” Ask questions, get help for their homework and invent stories ». Google specifies that access to Gemini will be possible through a Family Link account and that the data will not be used to cause artificial intelligence in this context.

Gemini control for parents

Through Family Link, which is already used for the management of children’s accounts on YouTube or Gmail, parents will be able to configure Gemini more precisely. They will also be able to completely block access to this new tool, if they wish.

If many child protection associations have already sounded alarm as to artificial intelligence and possible repercussions on the youngest, Google advises parents to remind their child that AI is not a human and that it is not necessary to grasp too personal information in Gemini.

Besides, Google does not veil its face and explains that AI can make mistakes and even warns that despite all the filters and safeguards put in place, children are likely to be exposed to content that parents would not have wanted them to consult.
