Google Fast Pair, the fast Bluetooth pairing protocol developed by Google, is about to evolve after years of good and loyal service. Playing a central role in the user experience, this technology triggers a pop-up at the bottom of the screen of an Android smartphone to invite the rapid connection of a pair of headphones True Wireless compatible. It also displays the remaining autonomy as soon as the earphones are opened, without it being necessary to go through the companion application.

A more engaging display of the headphones level of headphones

Android Authority would have identified a line of code hidden in the last update of the Google Play services (published in parallel to that of Android) indicating future changes in this interface. The current notification, which discreetly displays the percentages under the headphones’ icons, would be replaced by a new more readable and intuitive visual: three circular gauges, coded by color, clearly representing the battery level of the left and right headphones, as well as the case.

We also note the appearance of indications “Left” and “Right” next to the battery level of the headphones on the left and right. A welcome improvement for those who use a single earpiece at a time, or who simply want to distinguish the two channels more easily. This new interface therefore constitutes a significant improvement on the legibility of information, but we hope that it will not complicate the experience by requiring more manual intervention on the part of the user.

This update would aim to strengthen the user experience, in particular in the face of Apple competition. Airpods, when associated with an iPhone, already display clear information on each headset, but are always limited to a simplistic gauge.

Such hidden code lines are generally used for features during deployment or in testing phase on dedicated smartphones. The deployment of this new interface could therefore be imminent, or be the subject of adjustments before its official release. To date, no Google announces still specifies date.
