Google continues to refine the navigation experience on Its map applicationand this time, it is the summary screens of the routes that go to the downhill reel. Objective: more clarity, less density, and a visual accent worn where you really need it. This overhaul, currently deployed with version 25.13.06 of Google Maps for Android, is not yet available on iOS, but it deserves to dwell on it.

Clearer, simpler: Google Maps improves the overviews

Until now, the summary of a journey on Google Maps was presented in three compact lines, often crushed in a large interface. Lots of text, little air. From now on, the screen is frankly: the duration of the journey – key element – is displayed in greater, on two lines and aligned on the left. It is always accompanied by a color code to distinguish the different routes, but gains in readability and immediate impact.

Another discreet but well felt novelty: the indication of the estimated arrival time, presented explicitly in the form “arrived at 2:52 pm. This information, already previously implicit, now becomes a clear temporal compass, placed right next to the classic remarks of the “fastest itinerary, despite the usual traffic”. This kind of detail, apparently simple, concretely changes the perception of navigation.

The lower line retains essential data: distance, possible tolls, and other proposed optimizations. The whole thing benefits from a more balanced presentation, especially in width, better exploiting the space of the lower sheet (the famous Bottom Sheet). All the modes of transport take advantage of this facelift, which significantly lightens the screens formerly textually congested.

This new display interface is being deployed on Android via version 25.13.06. If you don't see it yet, a little patience: the deployment is progressive. Currently, no date is announced for iOS, but it would not be surprising to see her disembark in the coming weeks. On the other hand, Google comes from deploy new features for Search, Maps, Lens and Geminito improve the organization of our vacation.
