Google has not finished looking into court for practices deemed as anti-competitive. A trial has also collected interesting testimonies revealing that an astronomical sum is paid to Samsung by the Mountain View firm to guarantee Gemini a special place on Galaxy smartphones.

Google does everything to democratize Gemini, and Samsung takes advantage

Peter Fitzgerald, vice-president in charge of the platforms and world partnerships in Google, mentioned a “Colossal sum of money” paid every month to Samsung so that Gemini either pre-installed on its smartphones. As a bonus, the company was a percentage of income from advertisements displayed in the application.

We learn that these payments started in January, which “Following the condemnation of Google for violation of the antitrust law, partly due to similar agreements with Apple, Samsung and other companies in the field of research”specifies Wes Davis for The Verge.

Interestingly to note, Google went further with Samsung at the start of the year by making Gemini the default assistant Galaxy S25activated automatically via long support on the power button.

During his hearing, Peter Fitzgerald added that the contract with Samsung was lasting at least two years, and that other actors had approached the South Korean company to see their pre-installed application (Perplexity or Microsoft).

Google’s typing power remains a huge problem

A situation once again problematic, where Google imposes its services in practice in exchange for massive checks. This strategy certainly allows Samsung to garner comfortable income, but it compromises the neutrality of Android.

The fact that competitors like Microsoft or Perplexity have tried, in vain, to negotiate similar advantages on the Galaxy S25, shows how much the market remains dominated by the Mountain View giant.

A new chapter in history already in charge of Google with the antitrust authorities, with a trial still under investigation.

“The results of these hearings could prohibit Google from concluding default investment agreements in the future, selling Chrome and being forced to grant licenses for the vast majority of data that feed Google Search”explains The Verge.

Faced with this twist, Google simply indicated that it should only give up on default investment operations, and therefore the pre-installation of some of its services (Gemini, Search, etc.).
