Google TV arrives on inexpensive smart TVs, for better or for worse?

During the I/O 2025 conference, Google highlighted its desire to further expand the radius of action of Google TV. Beyond the usual connected televisions and HDMI Dongles, the Mountain View firm intends to seduce a new audience with very accessible models, built with little RAM. A bet that could cost the user experience dearly, as the past has already proven.

Google TV on low-cost TV: a return to the galleys?

Shibana Radhakrishnan, engineering director at Google, confirmed the group’s desire to collaborate with certain manufacturers to launch low Ram Panel TVS. Clearly: televisions connected under Google TV, but with barely 1.5 GB of RAM. An assumed strategy to make the platform more accessible, but annoyingly recalls the pitfalls encountered by HD chromecast or low -end Android TV boxes.

Admittedly, Android 16 for TV introduces software optimizations supposed to make everything more fluid. But the equation remains the same: little memory + limited storage = performance quickly at half mast. We saw it with low -cost chromecasts, often stuck in slowdowns barely a year after their purchase.

What challenges is that Google seems to ignore the lessons of the past. Even though Google TV services are enriched, especially with The arrival of Gemini (the House’s Assistant)the platform needs more resources, no less. At a time when competitors are betting on power and longevity, Google seems to bet on volume, even if it means sabotaging the long -term experience?

It remains to be seen if these ultra-supplier televisions will seduce without frustrating. For the moment, the intention is there … but prudence is essential.
