GPT-4.1 is finally there: Chatgpt is leaping forward on performance

The star model of Openai, GPT-4.1, is now offered in all the paid formulas of Chatgpt (Plus, pro, team). The announcement, made this May 15, marks a turning point in the offer offered to professionals and the curious of everyday life. For free accounts, it will be necessary to wait: OpenAI promises progressive access to education and business customers in the coming weeks.

GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini: performance cut for devs and context

What distinguishes GPT-4.1 from its predecessors is its ability to manage a much larger context: up to a million tokens, an entry length text/video/image multiplied compared to GPT-4O, which capped at 128,000 tokens. This advance opens the way to much richer interactions, especially for developers or complex professional uses.

Openai also insists on speed: GPT-4.1 is faster for coding tasks, while surpassing models O3 and O4-Mini in matters of reasoning. All without sacrificing the quality of the answers, on the contrary.

In the same movement, the GPT-4O Mini, launched in 2024 as a light and economical version, is replaced by a new variation: GPT-4.1 Mini. This version becomes the default option, even for free accounts, signaling a clear strategic change in favor of increased performance, even for the general public.

On the other hand, the GPT-4.1 Nano model, which was praised as the fastest and light of Openai, remains to the subscribers absent from this wave of deployment. Its integration into Chatgpt remains uncertain.
