Heat wave, stifling nights: this very popular tip does not refresh the room at all
During high heat, certain night habits become uncomfortable: we change positions, we discover our legs, we remove the sheets, we open windows and shutters – often without real effect. This type of situation tends to repeat itself over the nights as the temperature increases.
In order to identify effective solutions to improve night comfort, research has been conducted online. Among the frequently relayed advice is that of placing a damp cloth in front of a fan to refresh the ambient air. To check the relevance of this method, a test was carried out in a controlled domestic environment.
So what temperature does it make in Digital ?
The experience took place in a room of size comparable to a room, usually used for the storage of test equipment. On arrival, the temperature noted was 25.6 ° C. A laundry moistened with cold water has been fixed on the front of a Duux Whisper fan. This model was chosen arbitrarily; Other equivalent devices (Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite, Amazon Basic or Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+, among others) could have been used in the same way.

The air flow was not completely obstructed, in order to allow good diffusion in the room. Setted with maximum power, the fan has well produced a feeling of freshness. However, after several statements made for almost an hour, the temperature remained stable at 25.6 ° C. The addition of wet cloth had no measurable effect on the room temperature.

This stability confirms that if the fan offers a feeling of freshness, it does not decrease the actual temperature of the air. As explained in [cet article](Publication-Link id = “151841”), the effect felt is linked to the evaporation of sweat, and not to cooling the atmosphere.

In conclusion, the use of a damp cloth in front of a fan does not provide a notable thermal gain. A more effective alternative is to orient the fan towards a window, as detailed in [un précédent article](Publication-Link id = “189093”). This configuration allows better air circulation and contributes more to refresh the interior.
