We park his car, we pay the bill, we go home … And now a few weeks later, we discover that his name, his email, and even his license plate circulate in bad hands. It is the blow that Indigo has just announced: one of the biggest names in parking was the victim of a cyber attack. The company has tried to reassure its world, but the flight is there. It remains to understand what has really been touched, and why it does not happen to others.

Cyber attack at Indigo: exposed personal data, confidence to be preserved

A parking operator is not spontaneously associated with a target of cyber attacks. And yet, Indigo confirmed that it was targeted by a computer intrusion which allowed malicious individuals to access several types of personal data. A new illustration of the porosity of information systems, even in the most unexpected fields.

In its press release, Indigo draws up a specific inventory: the hackers were able to recover names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and, in some cases, registration plates. If banking data and passwords remain intact, this information is enough to fuel targeted scam attempts. A personalized email, a well orchestrated call … The terrain is fertile for phishing.

Faced with the incident, Indigo reacted without delay. The company has strengthened its security systems, informed the CNIL, as required by the GDPR, and filed a complaint. The gesture is in accordance with the rules, but confidence requires more than just respecting the procedures. Because a cyber attack, even well managed, always leaves a trace.

Present in more than 500 cities and 10 countries, Indigo manages 2,700 car parks and 1.7 million parking spaces daily. A dense network, which directly affects millions of drivers. In 2023, the group displayed a turnover of 839.4 million euros, proof of its key role in our urban trips. So when a cyber attack occurs, it is not just a technical hook: it is a questioning of the confidence granted by this immense network of users. On this scale, data security is no longer an option, but a vital necessity.
