Instagram checks your age with AI, hunt for minor users is reinforced

The company, who sees Tiktok as a major threatuse AI to identify a suspect account and convert it to “Teen account”a label with enhanced protections. The interactions are limited, in particular by restricting people capable of contacting the user and filtering the content. For those under 16, any modification of these parameters requires parental authorization.
AI identifies “Teen birth” on Instagram
The AI to identify age is not new to Instagram but Meta confirms that this technology makes it possible to ensure that adolescents only use private accounts. To do this, the company uses indicators, such as the analysis of publications of “Happy birthday” or reports from other users.
Instagram is aware that errors arise and has implemented measures to guarantee the accuracy of the AI and allow poorly categorized users to modify their parameters. “The digital world continues to evolve and we must evolve with it”explains the company in its blog post. “This is why it is important that we are working with parents to ensure that as many adolescents have as possible benefit from the protective parameters offered by Teen Accounts.”
The company also announces the sending of notifications to parents who recall the importance of discussing with their teenagers of the need to give their real age. Meta stresses that verification of the accuracy of the date of birth is the most effective means for young users to benefit from the best protections.
As a reminder, Facebook and Messenger have already introduced the “Teen account”two weeks ago. According to Meta, at least 54 million adolescents have already been enrolled in this type of account worldwide and 97 % of users between the ages of 13 and 15 have kept the protections.
