iPhone 17: 5 surprises that Apple had hidden us well
You think you know everything about iPhone 17of the iPhone 17 pro / pro myX and theiPhone airthese new premium smartphones inaugurating both new design elements and a new A19 chip? Apple’s latest born, however, hide some surprises.
A new camera dedicated to selfies
CAP change side module photo/front video on the latest Apple iPhone. The apple opts for a new sensor in square format – they are usually rectangular – and 18 megapixels, where the serial iPhone 16 embarked a 12 Mpx sensor. This higher definition, accompanied by a new format serves a new functioning, inspired by Mac: Center Stage. The idea is as follows: by default, the frontal module of the iPhone 17 will not take square photos, but rectangular and in landscape mode, using the central portion of the sensor; The images should therefore maintain a definition of 12 Mpx. But it will be possible to operate only a part of the sensor to capture selfies in landscape mode without rotating the smartphone, or even to use it to simulate an ultra -angle – with the help of the AI, specifies the apple. And as with Center Stage on Mac, the selfie camera aims to keep the user at the center of the image, even when it is in motion during their conversations Facetime.

The transition to 100 % ESIM is a reality
It is a real change in the universe of telephony. The abandonment of physical SIM cards is now a reality in the world of apple. He was started three years ago with the release of iPhone 14,, only compatible with ESIM, but not in France: in the United States, smartphones and their successors prefer dematerialized SIMs. The geographic segmentation continues, and the iPhone 17 are always offered with a port for nano-SIM card in France. However, this is not the case with theiPhone air : space constraint obliges, the ultra-fine smartphone abandons the SIM card cart in favor of a 100 % ESIM operation, whatever the region of the world. Good to know for those who plan to invest, and will therefore have to convert their SIM to ESIM with their operator.

A steam bedroom in iPhone
This is a first in Apple’s universe, while they are frequently found in smartphones of competing brands. The steam rooms are legion within Android terminals – the Galaxy S22 Ultra de Samsung was already equipped in 2022, and the option has become more democratic, so that it is also within the most recent Galaxy S25 FE. Apple previously favored cooling based on graphene sheets and now put, only on the 17 pro and pro max models provided with the A19 pro chip, on a steam room. “Disionized water sealed inside evacuates the heat of the A19 Pro chip, making it possible to support even higher performance”specifies the apple. From there to question a trend in this overheating chip, and only our laboratory tests will allow us to see more clearly. Cupertino promises anywhere an unrivaled power: we look forward to checking it.
A quick charger … but not for everyone
The load power remains a subject of tension for many smartphones holders: as a number of competing terminals (Samsung or Google), the iPhone struggles to really take care of themselves quickly. Apple has formalized with its iPhone 17 a new 40 W charger, called 40W Dynamic Power Adapter and capable of offering an upright power up to 60 W. But it should not be raised: not only does it not mean that the iPhone 17 can be recharged at 60 W, or even 40 W, but this adapter is reserved in Canada, Japan, Mexico, China, Taïwan, Philippines and the United States.
A new chip for enriched connectivity
It is in the small lines that we see that Apple saw his copy again. The A19 chip, in its classic version as its pro version, includes a module called N1 dedicated to its connectivity. And this is where the iPhone 17 series interests: not only is it compatible with WiFi 7 and promises particularly high flows, but it supports the very recent Bluetooth 6.0 standard. One last connectivity should be noted: Thread. It concerns users of connected objects, since the management of this communication protocol dedicated to home automation is now included in iPhone 17. In other words, the latest apple smartphones will benefit from easy access to the connected objects of the house, and it may be that they can serve as “concentrator”, that is to say basic, as did the Apple TV 4K, the HomePod (2nd generation) and the HomePod Mini.
