The scene is like a technological fable. A customer of the very controversial Tesla robotaxis service in San Francisco filmed a supervisory driver sound asleep behind the wheel, while the vehicle was driving on autopilot. The picture, somewhere between grotesque and disturbing, sums up quite well the contradictions of an era where the promise of automobile autonomy comes up against the most trivial of human weaknesses.

The sleepiness of supervisors weakens the Tesla system
The Internet user tells about Reddit that the driver fell asleep three times during the journey. “It was the beep that woke him up every time.”he writes about the system’s inattention alerts. Despite reporting it through the app and mentioning video evidence, Tesla never responded. Another passenger confirms having had the same driver, dozing for most of an hour-long morning trip between Temescal and San Francisco.
The safety driver literally fell asleep at least three times during the ride. Each time, the car’s security alert went off and it was the beep that woke him up […] I reported it through the app to Tesla’s support team and told them I had videos, but never heard back.
