It’s the end for the Messenger application on Windows and Mac, here are the solutions and alternatives
On his dedicated help page – where it is notably indicated how to save your chat history before the end – Meta indicates that following this abandonment it will no longer be possible to connect via the application and that it will then automatically redirect the user to the Facebook application (on Windows) or the Facebook website (for Mac) for messages.

Although the Messenger application on desktop still had some flaws and bugs, it was still the best solution for using the service on a computer. Redirecting towards less practical alternatives in order to achieve development savings can certainly seem stingy for a company as wealthy as Meta. A pure and simple abandonment of Messenger in favor of WhatsApp in the coming months would not be totally surprising.
What solutions and alternatives?
Besides using the Facebook application on desktop, the mobile versions of Messenger on iOS and Android, or even the messenger.com and facebook.com sites as suggested (and possibly creating webapps to take advantage of it in the form of an “application” with Chrome, Edge and Safari), there are solutions.
Provided that they still work tomorrow, third-party clients allow you to benefit from your Messenger messages with alternative interfaces. This is particularly the case with Beeper, software that allows you to group all your conversations (Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Signal, etc.) in one place.

Finally, this can also be the ideal opportunity to abandon Mark Zuckerberg’s solution for a more convincing and less polluted alternative (by AI, in particular). WhatsApp, still from Meta, is certainly more complete and efficient, while Signal offers a more refined, very secure and more private solution.
