Laowa unveils a new Fisheye Zoom for Full Frame hybrids

Laowa, brand of compatible photo/video objectives from the Chinese company Venus Optics, has just unveiled a new goal for 24×36 mm Full Frame hybrids. It is an ultra-wide fisheye 8-15 mm zoom which has a luminous constant opening F2.8 and which is available in the main hybrid frames on the market: Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and L-MOUNT.

A Fisheye objective is a type of ultra-angle photographic objective, recognizable by its very domed front lens and its ability to capture an extremely wide field of vision, up to 180 °. It owes its name to the visual effect it produces with an image, recalling the hemispherical vision of a fish underwater. It allows you to create images, both in photo and video, very creative that we find in street photography, landscape or astrophotography, for example.

The Laowa 8-15mm F/2.8 FF Zoom Fisheye is a circular Fisheye zoom. At 8 mm, it delivers a round image in the center of the sensor. As the focal length is increasing, this image is gradually taking up more and more space on the surface of the sensor to cover it completely and obtain an ultra-angle. One of the peculiarities of this type of objectives is the exacerbated distortions which can give a creative effect or which will be compensated in post-production.

The Laowa 8-15mm F/2.8 FF Zoom Fisheye operates an optical formula composed of 13 elements divided into 9 groups, a diaphragm with 9 strips offering a constant maximum opening F2.8, a minimum focusing distance of 16 cm and therefore a maximum magnification ratio of 0.23x. It is a 100% manual objective, without autofocus and without communication with the case.

We find a metal construction with 3 lines of delights: one for manual focus, one for the zoom and the choice of the focal length, one for the opening. The objective weighs approximately 650 grams, measures 9.45 cm long and 7.64 in diameter (for the version in Canon RF frame).

Laowa has chosen to decline this goal in the cinema version. It is Laowa 8-15mm T2.9 FF Zoom Fisheye Cine, the same Recarrossé model to meet the needs of professional videographers and filmmakers: notched rings to combine control systems type Follow Focus, for example. This version is offered in PL mount.

The Laowa 8-15mm F/2.8 FF Zoom Fisheye is already available and offered at 835 euros. It is available in Sony E frames, Canon RF, Nikon Z and L-MOUNT.
