While Nicolas de Tavernost, boss of LFP Media, announced earlier this week that the door was “Large open, very wide open, double -beating” with Canal+ for find a distribution agreement From Ligue 1+, the reality is much darker. A legal action was indeed brandished as threatened by the television group of Vincent Bolloré for “Abusive discrimination”.
A Condition of the LFP makes the agreement with Canal+ to the distribution of Ligue 1+
According to information from The teamthe distribution of the Ligue 1+ service from the 2nd day of the French football competition by Canal+ was on the right track. However, a request would have put an icy cold in the negotiations a few hours before the launch.
While an agreement had been signed, the Professional Football League (LFP) finally wanted to make a more than restrictive request to Canal+ to distribute Ligue 1+ : Put under the table its legal litigation launched in 2021 around the television rights of the competition – more specifically on their attribution to Amazon, considered unfair because concluded at a very low price.
Unsurprisingly, all of this has poisoned the situation, where all the other actors already distribute and without problem the Ligue 1+ platform. The history of Ligue 1 diffuser from 1984 to 2020, thus retaliated through an interposed letter.
A formal notice for “abusive discrimination”
Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, has indeed sent an email to the LFP, judging that this request was “A last -minute unilateral initiative of the LFP to try to force Canal+ To give up disputes and the legitimate exercise of his rights, under the threat of being denied the distribution of the Ligue 1+ “service”.
Adding that the platform was already available from all other market players, the group considers it to be the victim of “Abusive discrimination” On the part of the LFP by adding as a distribution condition the withdrawal of the litigation of 2021.
The letter is thus accompanied by a formal notice from Canal+ asking the LFP “To demonstrate, before August 21 in the morning, that the parties had made the renunciation by Canal+ to all the current disputes against the LFP an essential element of the Distribution contract of the Ligue 1+ service”.
If this is not the case, the contract initially concluded between Canal+ and the LFP will have to come into force, with the provision of Ligue 1+ distribution flows “Before August 22, 2025, 3 pm, to allow Canal+ to offer this service to its subscribers before the start of the second day of the Ligue 1 championship”.
Clearly, Canal+ believes that they can distribute Ligue 1+ without withdrawing its complaint, and threatens to go to court if the LFP persists.
