Magnets on the fridge, the debate relaunched: should we really stop?

Several media outlets recently focused on a subject that was unexpected to say the least: decorative magnets on refrigerators could, according to them, pose a problem. In some articles, it is said that these small objects loved by collectors would harm certain modern features integrated into the most recent refrigerators. Still other articles explain in particular that these accessories could interfere with on-board technologies, such as air purification systems, water or ice dispensers, or even ventilated cold. A statement that arouses curiosity… and skepticism.

But then what are these innovations that our collection of French adhesive departments will definitively destroy? Atmospheric ionization systems to clean it up? Water distribution on the facade? Making ice cubes? Worse ! the No Frost cold circuit?! Thunderstorm ! Oh despair! O enemy magnet!

Well no, “one of the additions whose quality can be altered by the presence of magnets? The touch screen on the refrigerator door, for example. Placing magnets on the fridge door will then create a magnetostatic field which risks damaging the device. This phenomenon mainly concerns the most modern refrigerators on the market.“Of course, we immediately consulted our screen specialist, Raphaël, for whom the threat is not really terrifying: “I don’t see any contraindication. Besides, who would stick magnets – which wouldn’t even hold – on a screen?“For once, we have to admit that the guy is not completely wrong.

And for the rest of the less ambitious refrigerators, which do not have a screen, the risk is, you guessed it, zero. The various components will not be impacted even if your refrigerator doors proudly display the complete map of France of departments, that of Europe of countries, also complete, adding a small extra planisphere and a good fifteen holiday souvenirs. We still contacted the engineers working at Haier for confirmation and they were categorical: “magnets (a type of vacation souvenir) have no impact on the performance or longevity of the refrigerator. The magnetism is not strong enough to damage the product“.

We can therefore continue to adorn our refrigerators with a multitude of magnets, they will not be any worse off even if, aesthetically, it is all a question of taste.
