Meta abandons Messenger on Mac and Windows: the crucial manipulation not to forget

The news went almost unnoticed, and yet: Meta is removing its Messenger applications for desktop computers. Those still using the software will soon receive a notification telling them that they have two months left. After this time, the application will no longer work. It’s also impossible to download it again: it has disappeared from the Mac App Store.

Messenger on macOS and Windows, it’s over

Meta thus pushes its users towards the web versions, accessible via Facebook.com for those who have an account, or Messenger.com for others. A choice which can be explained by the group’s desire to concentrate its resources on WhatsApp And Threads, launched here in 2023. Messenger on computer becomes accessory.

For many, switching to the browser means losing what made a dedicated application interesting: the discreet notifications, the independent window, the absence of distraction. Working with Messenger open in one tab already means having ten other tabs flashing next to it.

Pay attention to your history

Meta may multiply the warnings, but the message is not getting across. Before closing, users need to enable secure storage and create a PIN in encryption settings. Without it, all conversations exchanged via the application will disappear. No autosave, no safety net. It’s up to everyone to remember to do the manipulation, at the risk of losing everything.

This forced migration comes after a previous failure. In September 2024, Meta attempted to replace the native application with a Progressive Web App. The experience ended in uproar: slowness, bugs, chronic instability. Obviously, the group preferred to cut things short rather than correct the situation.

An advantage that disappears

Messenger, however, retains a valuable particularity. Unlike WhatsApp for example, you can create an account with a simple email address. No need to give your phone number. This discretion is becoming rare. WhatsApp is certainly preparing a system of pseudonyms to hide numbers, but you will still need to provide one when registering. On computer, Messenger therefore joins the cohort of web services only. On mobile, iOS and Android, the application continues to run normally, for now.
