Before, we “forgot” to put it away. Now you will have to learn to do without it. The Italian Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, has just announced a measure that upsets habits: the pure and simple prohibition of the mobile phone in all schools, including high schools. More than just a regulatory adjustment, it is a frontal response to a generation that lives the screen grafted by hand. And this time, no educational excuse to cut it.

We want a school where attention, silence and study become values again.

Prohibition of laptops at school in Italy: the government imposes a digital detox cure

No more question of “educational consultation” or “discreet break” in full class. Italy is preparing to ban the smartphone in all schools, including high schools, from the start of the next school year. A ministerial circular will grave black on white this new rule of the game, with disciplinary sanctions.

The measure is based on alarming observations: 38 % of young people would suffer from sleep disorders linked to the intensive use of the smartphone, and the risk of repetition would be multiplied by three in the most addicted students. Some children, barely out of primary school, would already consult content for adults, without any filter or support.

We have overwhelming data: 6 -year -old children consult pornographic sites. It is also very worrying to note that 38 % of adolescents suffer from sleep disturbances because of the phone.

The tone is set: the ministerial circular provides for a general prohibition, without exception for educational use, except in very supervised cases such as individualized education plans (PEI) or personalized didactic plans (PDP). Each establishment will have to integrate this setpoint into its internal regulations, with a system of sanctions.

Italy thus follows the steps to France, where laptops are banished in schools until the third. But Rome goes further by removing all educational latitude – a first on this scale in Europe. The debate is open: should we supervise or prohibit? Italy has chosen the strong way.
