Netflix finally goes to HDR10+, this is why that's important

Netflix muscle its visual arsenal. The streaming platform adds the HDR10+ to its list of supported formats, alongside the standard HDR10 and the Dolby Vision. A technical detail? Not that much. For those who have already raged in front of a too dark series where we guess more than we see, this evolution could well change the situation.

What is HDR10+, what exactly is it? A more intelligent version of classic HDR, and direct competitor of Dolby Vision, promoted by Samsung and Panasonic in particular. Where HDR10 applies the same settings to a whole video, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision adjust contrasts and image brightness by image. Result: deeper blacks, better controlled highlights, and a much more natural feeling of relief. Ideal for careful aesthetics content – in other words, a good part of the Netflix catalog.
But the real key here is the integration of AV1 codec. This video compression format allows you to broadcast 4K and HDR content without exploding your data package. Already used for mobile views, AV1 now becomes a lever to deploy HDR10+ more widely, without compromise on the fluidity of streaming.
No need to buy a TV to take advantage of it – well, not necessarily. Just have an HDR10+ and AV1 compatible device (the majority of recent televisions, some high -end smartphones), and a subscription Netflix Premium. Not all content is available in this format, but the most popular titles have already leap.
This technical development comes at the right time, while Netflix continues ambitious new features in March 2025: Adolescencea dramatic series carried by Stephen Graham, The Residencethe new political thriller produced by Shonda Rhimes or, The Electric Statescience fiction blockbuster with Millie Bobby Brown (who will have made a huge flop). Content now served in its best case.
