Nintendo begins to reach out the bridge between two generations of consoles. With The release of the Switch 2 scheduled for June 5the 20.0.0 update of the Switch 1 adds several key elements which will be fully exploited with the new machine. From virtual gaming cards to data transfer in the cloud, this version prepares the machines, and players, to enter the era of continuity.

At the heart of this update, we first find the famous Virtual game cardsa new digital format that imitates the operation of physical cartridges. Players can store Games and DLC, then “charge” or “eject” from one console to another. You can also lend a game to a member of the Nintendo family group, for a period of 14 days. And if the person is online, the game can even be recovered from a distance at any time.
Another novelty: the Gameshare function, which allows you to locally share a game between two consoles … provided that one of them is a switch 2. This option does not work between two current switch, and will therefore not be fully usable until June 5.
Nintendo also introduces a long -awaited function: data transfer to Switch 2.. We can now send your data to the Cloud 1, to recover it later on a Switch 2, without having to keep the two consoles side by side. Please note: this operation resets the original console, and the data expire after a year if it is not restored.
Finally, online license settings allow you to play your digital games from any console connected to the Internet, without using virtual game cards. A notable evolution on the part of Nintendo, historically chilly on the portability of its content.
To better find yourself there, here are the main news in this 20.0 patch:
- Adding virtual game cards: digital games managed as cartridges, ready for the family group, usable on two Max consoles.
- Gameshare: Local game sharing possible only from a Switch 2.
- Transfer to Switch 2: locally or via a dedicated server (erases switch 1 after sending).
- New menu to transfer several backups at a time.
- Identity verification to secure access to virtual cards.
- Online license settings: playing digital games without a loaded card, as long as the console is online.
- Modified color for eshop and acts icons.
- User icons updated.
- The term “main console” becomes “console on which the pass are activated”.
