The exact amount is $ 2.17 billion stolen, an increase of 17 % compared to the same period in 2022, the year of the sadest record in terms of theft. And only one hack explains the explosion of these figures.

North Korean pirates are formidable

Exchange Bybit has undergone a massive attack of North Korean hackers who stole more than $ 1.4 billion in cryptocurrencies. The FBI confirmed that the funds were bleached and are now in the hands of the North Korean regime.

Chainalysis explains that this attack is part of a well -prowled strategy in North Korea. Experts specify that cyber attacks “become more and more central to the planning strategies for the regime’s sanctions”.

North Korea is a very special country, cut off from the outside world and the international banking system. To compensate, the government therefore relies on formidable expertise in terms of cyber attacks.

Obviously, Western companies are the target of these pirates who steal cryptocurrencies to finance the nuclear weapons program.

But that’s not all that North Korea does. The country also deploys thousands of computer scientists who infiltrate companies, agents who steal intellectual properties or make companies sing under threat of publication of sensitive files.

North Korean piracy goes further than Bybit. According to a previous Chainalysis report, North Korea hackers are responsible for almost two thirds of all cryptocurrency hacks in 2024.

Exchange platforms and regulators therefore find themselves in a very complicated situation in the face of these many flaws exploited by cybercriminals.
