PlayStation Plus: drastic increase in price in more than 20 countries, without the slightest counterpart

Sony chose discretion to pass the pill: on April 9, between two titles offered, the firm slipped a paragraph at the bottom of the page to announce an immediate increase in the PS plus subscription in around twenty countries-mainly in Latin America, in Southeast Asia and in the Pacific. Then, on April 16, Canadian subscribers in turn received bad news in their mailbox.
PS more in 2025: more expensive, but not better
The new Canadian prices speak for themselves:
- $ 110 for the essential formula (against 95 before)
- $ 190 for Extra (instead of 155)
- $ 225 for Premium (against 190)
In other words, between 16 and 23 % increase, without the slightest novelty in exchange. Inflation disguised, but not very subtle.
These increases target markets where the PlayStation is archi-dominant, and where competition is struggling to exist. A sort of assumed position annuity, where players’ loyalty serves as a financial lever. They are not asked for their opinion – we send them the invoice.
Rigning prices without offering the slightest novelty is rarely well perceived. Here, the pill goes all the more bad as it is not an isolated case: the price of the PS5 consoles had already been increased in these same regions a few months ago. In France, let us also remember that The PS5 without disc reader increased from 449.99 to € 499.99.
And the price of the PS more in France, then?
In France, the current PS Plus prices are respectively € 71.99, € 125.99 and € 151.99 for the three formulas over 12 months. If the increase observed in Canada should be applied proportional to France, we could expect 83 to 85 € for Essential, around 160 € for extra and up to € 180 for Premium.
This would represent an increase of 15 to 20 %, without gain for the subscriber. This scenario, still hypothetical, is not absurd in view of the decisions already taken by Sony in other territories where the brand is well established.
