Proton Authenticator: Free, open source and secure, here is the last 2FA application on the market

It leaves and it comes back. While Dropbox has just abandoned her password managerit is Proton’s turn to add, conversely, a safety string to its ever more complete bow. The company has just launched Proton Authenticator, an application which, as its name suggests, proposes to manage authentication with two factors (2FA).

Proton Authenticator: a complete and secure solution

Proton now offers many services, from online storage to its VPN or even password manager. The latter already supports the filling of 2FA codes for quick and secure connections, but the Swiss today wanted to go further with a dedicated application.

Obviously encrypted from start to finish, it is also always open source, guaranteed without advertising or trackers and free. No need to have a proton account to use it elsewhere. Connecting with a Proton account, however, makes it possible to synchronize your 2FA codes on all your devices. The solution also has the merit of being available everywhere in the form of applications: iOS, Android, MacOS, Linux and Windows.

Compatible with export but also import from other 2FA applications (Authy, 2fas, Google Authenticator, Lastpass Authenticator, Proton Pass …), Proton Authenticator allows access to its codes even by being offline. An automatic backup system is also there.

To try to stand out from competition, already present in this sector by many applications, Proton indicates: “The majority of them are at a closed source code, depend on advertising and trackers, and do not offer 2FA -end -to -end backups.“”

A still perfectible application

Like its recent services, like Proton Drive which improves regularly, Proton still has a little work to be killed on Proton Authenticator. After having created one by one by our 2FA codes because Microsoft Authenticator does not allow rapid export (…), everything is functional and responsive. Some options and a clear interface are there. On the other hand, it is impossible to copy a code into a single action directly from the main page, and especially impossible to delete a service from your device. There is no doubt that it will happen quickly.
