This is the end of a complicated love story between Dazn and French football. Gathered this Tuesday, April 15, the various presidents of Ligue 1 clubs agreed to put an end to the contract between the Professional Football League and the English streaming platform. Dimol: Dazn would have refused the conditions of this break. We take stock.
A premature contract end
While the contract binding the LFP in Dazn was to run until 2026, it is off to stop prematurely. This is in any case what the 18 presidents of the clubs of the elite of French football were decided at the end of a college. This decision was then validated in the process by a vote of the Board of Directors of the LFP.
In a press release, the league said: “LFP Media takes note of the failure of mediation initiated in early March 2025. The contract binding the parties remains in force and LFP Media expects its partner that it fully executes all of its obligations in this respect.”
It was then necessary to agree on the conditions of the breach of the contract, and that's where it gets stuck. In the words, Dazn still has to pay 140 million euros during two private maturities on April 30 and June 30, as well as compensation between 110 and 125 million euros.
But the streaming service recalled that it had an exit clause after the league season 1 2025/2026, and therefore that compensation should be calculated on the basis of the 375 million euros due by then, and not on the 1.5 millions of euros which were requested until the end of the contract in 2029.
For his part, Dazn also claims accounts at the LFP. Following the mediation process launched last March, which ended this April 15, the platform required a payment of 573 million euros at the League “For obversé failure” And “Deputy goods”.
The two parties will therefore have to go back into discussion to find another way out of their conflict. In the meantime, what about the broadcast of Ligue 1 next season? Between the project of an LFP OTT platform, or the arrival of other streamers (Disney+, Apple TV+ perhaps?), The future is more than ever in fog. To follow therefore.
