You have surely seen information passing through social networks suggesting that bank transfers will be blocked during the Christmas period. This information was quickly relayed and caused some panic. However, if all of this is partly true, there is no reason to worry because the process is normal and even habitual.

SEPA transfers closed from December 25 to 28: why is this happening?

No, you will not be able to make SEPA bank transfers from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 Decemberbut this is completely normal. These dates correspond to the closure of TARGET2 (Trans-European Automated Real-time Gross Settlement Express Transfer system 2), the real-time payment system of the Eurosystem (the European Central Bank and the national central banks of the euro area).

Remember that SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) concerns all those who make payments in euros and allows transfers, direct debits and card payments to be made in a uniform manner between banks in participating countries.

This closure is a common procedure and is always scheduled for public holidays or during maintenance. For example, in 2025, TARGET2 will also be closed on January 1 for New Year’s Day, April 18 for Good Friday and April 21 for Easter Monday, as well as for May 1.

Anticipate bank transfers during the Christmas period

If you planned to make transfers during these dates, you will need to make them in advance, from December 29. Please note that although these interruptions are temporary, they can still influence or even delay certain transfers and the receipt of salaries if your company has not anticipated the situation.

Alternatives to SEPA transfers during the Christmas bank holidays

While TARGET2 is closed, there are solutions to make certain transfers without delay. Instant transfers, such as those offered by SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, will continue to work and allow funds to be transferred between accounts at different banks in seconds.

In addition, internal transfers, that is to say between two accounts opened in the same bank, also remain possible and are processed immediately. To avoid any problems, it is advisable to check your balance and plan your payments before public holidays, so that essential transfers, such as rent or bill payments, go out on time.
