Sony FE 28-70mm OSS II: what the new version of the full-frame kit lens really changes at €479

Here is a somewhat discreet v2: taking advantage of the launch of its new Alpha A7VSony renews its 24×36 mm optical kit and announces the FE 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II. Which begins its life in an even more discreet way since for the moment, there is no kit integrating it into an A7V!

If Sony is not sounding trombones and drums for this new lens at €479 it is because the FE 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II is not really a revolution. The optical formula is strictly identical to the first iteration. Namely a construction of 9 lenses in 8 groups, including three aspherical lenses and an ED glass, all served by a diaphragm with seven blades. We are far from the 20 elements in 15 groups and the 11-blade diaphragm of the 24-70 mm f/2.8 GM II.

Weighing only 293g without a lens hood, the FE 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II nevertheless combines featherweight with its low price. And in this version II you benefit from brand new engines.

Compatible tracking at 120 fps

If you follow Sony’s 24x36mm bodies, you’ve no doubt noticed the autofocus and burst tracking prowess of recent models. Like theAlpha A9 III, capable of tracking and shooting subjects at 120 frames per second…If the optics are level.

It is therefore this upgrade that Sony has carried out – even if we can doubt the relevance of sticking an lens costing less than 500 euros on a body costing more than 7000 euros! The new features of this FE 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II are in fact electromechanical: Japanese engineers have replaced the stepper motors and the electronics that control them.

The A9 III is currently the only Sony body that can shoot 120 fps, but its AF engine (which also samples at 120 Hz) is starting to trickle down to the rest of the range.

The benefit is not only compatibility with tracking/shooting at 120 fps, but also maintaining AF during zoom, a better combination between optical stabilization (OSS) and body stab as well as compatibility with the focus breathing compensation functionality (modification of the angle of view when changing the focusing distance), so dear to the hearts of videographers.

The FE 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II will be available during the month of February 2026 at €479.
