It is not every day that consumer audio products have progress in terms of repairability. When it is also one of the references in the sector that makes this commendable effort, we can only be conquered.
In a video posted on May 29, 2025Ifixit was a good surprise to see that all freshly announced WH-1000XM6 of Sony Has hiding encouraging secrets below its padded pads.
A relatively removable battery
Consulting that this new generation of 1000x helmet is less hostile to the repair than its predecessors, Ifixit first notes that the pads are precisely easy to remove. Enough to keep a presentable and hygienic product for the years to come. But the real good surprise is below. After removing 5 cruciform screws and disconnected a cable, the battery is immediately visible and easily changed.
Point of glue or weld here. Three screwdrivers and the component can be changed without too many problems. A great progress compared to the previous model which used profusion glue. Good news too, the speaker itself is also easily changing sudden. The lithium batteries damaging mechanically over time and the speakers being the most likely parts to be damaged, being able to change the two components without difficulty is a huge plus. We are not yet In terms of XL fairbudsbut for a product of this caliber, it is encouraging.
Also a malignant decision, the USB-C port is located on a separate circuit allowing an easy replacement and more economical than if it was welded to the rest of the motherboard. Unfortunately, the hoop is always a little delicate to change and in the event of wear of the foam, it is the whole room that will have to be swapped against a new one.
Efforts to make on the rest
If Sony has, it seems, made a point of honor to improve the dismantling of his aircraft, that is not all about everything. If the Ifixit guide is well done, Sony has not yet taken the trouble to publish a repair guide for his aircraft. The availability and price of spare parts for this kind of equipment are also quite random if we believe the history of the brand.
Finally, Sony’s after -sales accounts are not very reassuring and “approved service centers” which operates repairs outside the warranty warranty by the brand There are not numerous on the territory. Enough to discourage those who will not have the patience or the desire to track down spare parts or make 100 km to have their helmet repaired.
Making a repairable helmet is a big step forward, no doubt. But, to really exercise this right to repair, it is still necessary that it does not cost too much or is too complex. Two of the most important brakes in the face of repair.
