This doesn’t happen every day in the small intertwined world of tech and video games: Valve, quasi-monopolistic leader in dematerialized gaming on PC with Steam, will expand its portfolio hardware next year. It is therefore in 2026 that the Steam Machine and the Steam Controller will arrive without further details as to their precise release date or their sales price.

Everything in the cube
The big part of this announcement is undoubtedly the Steam Machine which, you are not dreaming, takes the name of the late “game box” project manufactured by third-party manufacturers launched just 10 years and 2 days ago. Whether it’s a coincidence of timing or timing perfectly calculated by Valve, no one will really know – one certainty, however, is that Gabe’s house will be at the helm of the design of the console, in the manner of Steam Deck. Building on its partnership with the team red on the nomad, the Steam Machine will integrate an APU designed “custom” by AMD. On the program: six Zen4 computing cores at a maximum frequency of 4.8 GHz, supported by 28 RDNA3 graphics cores. 16 GB of RAM are on board, with 8 GB of DDR6 VRAM. The only promise of performance,4K gaming at 60 FPS with FSR“, without us knowing more.

On the I/O side, there is an RJ45 Ethernet port, a DisplayPort 1.4 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, a USB-C port and 4 USB-A ports. Logically, the small gaming cube (approximately 160mm) will run on SteamOS, the same operating system used on the Steam Deck, based on the Linux Arch distribution with the double hat of “classic” PC. The front of the small cube can be interchanged for more customization; a nice market that Valve will be happy to develop, for sure. Two models with different storage capacities are planned: 512 GB and 2 TB, with the possibility of expanding it via the microSD port.

The fault of the controller
In addition to this console, Valve also formalized the arrival of the Steam Controller, the existence of which was no longer a secret. Its design will be familiar to anyone who has ever held a Steam Deck in their hands; it is in all and everything a reinterpretation of the controls of the portable console in a controller format. Thus, the two touchpads make the return in an identical layout – with an important novelty, and not the least, that of joysticks with TMR technology, much less susceptible to the famous “drift” specific to joysticks with potentiometers that are found in most controllers from “big” players such as Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo. Even the Steam Deck was not entitled to such honors…

The gyroscope and vibration motors will also return. Connectivity with the PC will be via a remote 2.4 GHz dongle, which also serves as a charging station. Up to 4 Steam Controllers can be paired for local multiplayer sessions. One clarification, however: if the Steam Machine will be compatible with the Steam Controller, the latter will not be supplied with the beast.
