Strangers Things has been around for just under 10 years, with the first season of the series arriving on Netflix in July 2016. And since this release, the following seasons have landed on the streaming platform increasingly spaced apart. In fact, season 4 of the show was released in 2022 and it has therefore been a while since fans have seen Mike, Dustin, Will, Lucas and the others.

If you’re not sure if you remember what happened in previous seasons of Stranger Thingsand in particular in the fourth, The Digitals is here to refresh your memory with an overview of the essential elements of the series that you need to know before tackling season 5 on November 27.

What happened in previous seasons of Stranger Things ?

001 and 011

At the end of season 3, Eleven loses her powers. When things get bad for the people of Hawkins (in season 4), she leaves with Dr. Sam Owens for Nevada to participate in Project Nina. There, she finds Dr. Brenner, whom she had not seen for ages.

This then forces her to confront the traumas of her past and we discover how Eleven was forced, when she was very young, to fight against Henry Creel, alias One. The latter worked in Hawkins’ laboratory as an assistant, imprisoned by Dr. Brenner who had placed a chip in his neck to suppress his powers.

One then uses Eleven to remove this chip and try to escape the laboratory. A battle ensued between the two telekineticists, ultimately leading Eleven to send One to the Upside Down, where he became Vecna.

Will under the influence of Vecna

If season 4 of Stranger Things reveals the link that unites Eleven to Henry Creel / One / Vecna, it also reveals that everything that has happened in Hawkins since the disappearance of Will Byers in 1983 is the work of Vecna. The demogorgons, the Mind Flayer, the opening of multiple portals to the Upside Down… it’s all because of Vecna.

Vecna has therefore already manipulated Will in the past, and he does not intend to stop, the young man explaining at the end of season 4 that being back in Hawkins allows him to feel Vecna’s presence more strongly than ever.

THE first minutes of season 5 revealed by Netflix have also shown that Vecna used Will in the Upside Down as soon as he disappeared, so the last season should clarify once and for all the link between these two protagonists.

Max in a coma

Vecna caused many victims in season 4 of Stranger Thingsincluding Chrissy and Fred, and did everything to kill Max. The latter was miraculously saved by Eleven (we don’t really know how) but found herself in a coma as a result of what Vecna did to her.

It is possible that she turns out to be blind in season 5 of Stranger Thingsif she ends up waking up. Indeed, Vecna’s attack on her left her with broken bones and impaired eyesight. It remains to be seen whether she will be permanently blind or not.

Hawkins, cursed city

Since the time that the small town of Hawkins has been the victim of disturbing phenomena (murders, disappearances, etc.), its inhabitants have come to consider that it is cursed. At the end of season 4, many of them even set sail while the army arrives because new rifts have been opened by Vecna and the Upside Down begins to invade the city.

Nature decays, the sky darkens, and the troop of Stranger Things realizes that although they have succeeded in weakening Vecna, the latter is far from being defeated and their once quiet little town is preparing to be the scene of an imminent battle.

Parents picking up

Joyce and Hopper spent Season 4 in Russia before eventually returning to Hawkins. So they missed everything related to Vecna even if they had to fight demogorgon in the Soviet Union. However, they still remain the only parents in the series to really know what is going on in Hawkins.

Those of Lucas, Dustin and Mike begin to really ask themselves questions, especially when they learn that their sons are linked to the Hellfire Club, which everyone in Hawkins begins to see as a cult when Eddie Munson is accused of murder.

They will perhaps end up knowing what is really going on in their town, especially since in season 5, it seems that Mike’s little sister, Holly, also finds herself involved in the fight against Vecna.
