Stranger Things: the TV settings you absolutely must deactivate to watch season 5 properly
We’re finally here: after long years of waiting, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things has just revealed its first episodes on the Netflix streaming platform. But you still have to look at them properly!
That’s good, the co-creator of the show Ross Duffer took the time to explain in a short video the essential adjustments to make to enjoy the series in the best conditions.

Dynamic contrast and smoothmotion, it’s “to throw away!”
In a video shared on his personal Instagram accountRoss Duffer guides us step by step through the menus of his television to ensure the correct settings to make so as not to spoil the work of the directors of photography, colorists and other technicians.
He goes to the general settings, then to those of the “image mode” and into the more precise “Expert Control” menu, in which he will have fun deactivating a bunch of features activated by default.
Dynamic contrast, super resolution, edge enhancer, color filter… all considered to be “garbage!”in his words.

Ross Duffer then returns to the “Picture Options” menu, where he will also remove noise reduction and “worst of all, Truemotion or Smoothmotion”which according to him gives a horrible “soap opera effect” to all programs.
Finally, he points out that most modern televisions have an Expert mode (in his case Dolby Vision-Movie Dark mode), which solves the majority of these problems, but not all. He therefore encourages spectators to be vigilant and never put their device in “vivid” mode: “this will destroy the colors, and that is not the director’s intention”.
We will appreciate it if a series creator (and director of several episodes) takes the time to do technical teaching, especially if it improves the viewing comfort of a series as important as Stranger Things.
As a reminder, the first four episodes of season 5 are available since Thursday, November 27, 2025 on Netflix. Volume 2 arrives on December 26, and the final episode will be released on January 1, 2026.
