Switch 2: “Many advances” of the LCD justify the absence of an OLED screen for Nintendo
While the OLED version was a great technological evolution compared to the first switch screen of the name, the Switch 2 does not keep this progress. Nintendo has indeed chosen to return to an LCD panel, and has already justified this decision.
Why an LCD screen instead of the OLED on the Nintendo Switch 2?
On the occasion of a round table taking place in New York, on which our colleagues from 01net were able to attend Visio, the choice of the LCD screen for the Switch 2 was mentioned.
Testuya Sasaki, hardware design lead of the new console, explained the reason for this choice despite the presence of OLED technology On the latest version Switch launched in 2021.
After “Examined the available technology and, after carefulness, we decided to keep the LCD screen”especially in the face of “Many advances […] Carried out in LCD technology during console development ”explains the manager.
To compensate for the abandonment of OLED technology, Testuya Sasaki recalls that the Switch 2 has the advantage of taking care of the Hdr (High Dynamic Range). Thus, the console would offer a palette of colors as rich as the OLED Switch, devoid of this technology.
Nintendo still seems to veil the face with this answer, which is clearly a marketing. This choice seems more dictated by cost considerations, especially when we know that OLED slab is more expensive than its LCD variant.
Knowing that the screen reaches an 8 inch size and displays a 120 Hz refreshment rate, the price difference between the two types of slabs is probably significant. By opting for the LCD, Nintendo would have limited the sale price of the Switch 2 so as not to have to cut on its margin. A strategic choice that already disappoints part of the players, despite the promises of the HDR.
