Elon Musk chose his moment. This Wednesday, the boss of Tesla revealed that his teams are currently leading to a new autonomous driving model (Full Self-Driving, or FSD) with“About ten times more parameters”And a major improvement in video compression. If everything goes as planned, the system could be deployed to the general public at the end of next month.

Tesla: An improved FSD to turn the page on trials?

However, the announcement comes in a very tense climate. Last Friday, a federal jury judged Tesla partially responsible for a fatal accident in 2019 in Floridaordering the company to pay more than $ 300 million. According to the jurors, the autopilot, presented as a security asset, failed to avoid the collision. Even more, they considered that Tesla’s communication had been able to mislead the drivers on the real level of autonomy of the system, which remains legally a simple driving assistant.

The troubles do not stop there. Shareholders filed a complaint against Musk and Tesla on Monday, accusing them of exaggerating the performance of their autonomous driving technologies and masked real risks, to the point of deceiving investors. The latter even evoke a “Significant risk” that vehicles violate the highway code, exposing the group to increased regulatory monitoring.

During this time, Tesla already experiences her very controversial Robotaxis in AustinTexas. The first trials were tainted with incidents – vehicles in the wrongs, untimely stops in the middle of a pedestrian crossing – which have not escaped American regulators.

Despite these controversies, the Musk effect struck again: the Tesla action climbed 2 % to Wall Street after its announcement. It remains to be seen whether this new FSD will be the brilliant demonstration that its supporters expect … or one more promise that crashes against the wall of technical and legal realities.
