That’s it, 64 GB of RAM costs more than a PS5: the worst to come?

Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (Slim Model)

How the pricing table works

The advent of AI undermines componentswith insatiable demand from big tech companies. This unfortunately has repercussions on consumers, with a clear and clear surge in prices, especially for RAM. RAM has become so expensive that it exceeds the price of home consoles (from the PS5 Slim to the Xbox Series X), proof to support this. And that would only be the beginning…

A PS5 at the price of 64 GB of RAM, nothing is going well

$599.99 is the price for 64 GB of DDR5 RAM in the G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series (2 x 32 GB)… with $60 off for Black Friday. A mind-blowing situation for Tom’s Hardware, which points out that this represents $200 more than the digital versions of the PS5 Slim and the Xbox Series S or even just $50 less than the PS5 Pro – promotion included.

“To put things in context, a more exclusive 64GB limited edition Corsair Dominator Titanium kit cost just $349 when we tested it a few months ago”illustrates the media. Earlier in the year, the standard edition was $299 during Prime Day, and some similar kits were marked down to $140.

If we take the case of G.Skill’s Trident Z5 Neo RAM kit, its price was $220 last September. By reaching $640 excluding discounts, we are simply facing an increase of $190 in the price in just two months.

Unfortunately, it looks like high prices will continue to dominate the headlines. The surge in demand for AI projects will push production lines to prioritize AI customers, leaving consumers paying full price or making do with what they have.

A difficult year 2026, before a return to normal in 2027

Predictions do not point to a relaxation of prices next year, due to the desire of the big names in tech to continue the AGI (artificial general intelligence), which aims to provide machines with intelligence comparable to that of humans in any field.

Tom’s Hardware reminds in passing that hard drives are starting to suffer the same situation, with certain models out of stock for a period of two years — forcing the switch to other storage media so as not to be impacted by the situation.

Faced with this global shortage, many distributors even offer memory kits and motherboards.

For the media, however, all this is not as worrying as expected, with a tight market for next year and potentially more reasonable prices in 2027. “That said, the memory market has always seen significant fluctuations: manufacturers overproduce for a few years, then underproduce for the next few years”he emphasizes.

In the meantime, price increases on finished tech products — in addition to single components — should be commonplace (smartphoneslaptops, tablets, consoles, etc.).
